"Spread smiles" marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey for Smile Foundation. Years ago, a group of friends united with a noble mission: to empower rural children and their families, offering them the resources and opportunities needed for sustainable lives, breaking free from the chains of economic hardship. They could not have imagined that their initial act of kindness would unleash a wave of profound transformation across the nation.
Starting its journey from a humble office in 2005, Smile Foundation quickly realized that merely providing educational support would not suffice to ensure the holistic development and independence of underprivileged children.
The challenges faced by underprivileged children in India are profound and multifaceted. From birth, these children confront barriers that hinder their path to a dignified life. Neglected neonatal and maternal care not only jeopardizes their health but also stunts their cognitive development, setting a fragile foundation for their educational journey. Access to quality education remains an arduous struggle in rural India, compounded by a shortage of qualified teachers and inadequate educational facilities. Financial constraints further exacerbate these challenges, often forcing children to abandon their schooling. This can occur when parents migrate to distant cities for work or due to cultural norms that prioritize sons' education over daughters'.
Furthermore, the challenges extend beyond education. Underprivileged children and their families also face layers of deprivation, including poor nutrition and limited access to quality healthcare. In environments where healthcare and hygiene are compromised, achieving the necessary health and mindset to thrive becomes even more daunting. And thus, by being in the loop of lacking basic amenities, these underserved communities struggle to break free from cycles of poverty and achieve a productive, sustainable life.
Addressing these profound challenges faced by rural youth and children in India, Smile Foundation aims at collaborating with all social stakeholder to make concerted efforts to establish sustainable educational and livelihood programs tailored to their unique needs and those of their families and for this at the heart of Smile Foundation's mission lies the concept of "sustainable livelihood," which embraces holistic development to foster enduring change.
Through our visionary "Life-Cycle approach," we have steadfastly empowered underserved children and their families across India. Each year, more than 1.5 million children and families in 2,000 villages across 25 states benefit from our tailored initiatives in education, health, women's empowerment, and grassroots organization support. For over a decade, Smile Foundation has tirelessly cultivated a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures resilience and creates opportunities within marginalized communities.
Central to our initiatives is a commitment to take quality Education, Health, and Livelihood at the doorsteps of those in need, regardless of the miles and altitude. Flagship programs like Mission Education integrate educational strategies aligned with the National Education Policy, emphasizing foundational language, numerical skills (FLN), and STEAM subjects. These efforts not only impart knowledge but also enhance cognitive abilities, laying a robust foundation for the future of these children.
In the realm of health, Smile Foundation transcends basic medical provisions. With Smile On Wheels (SOWs), our mobile healthcare units deliver comprehensive services directly to underserved communities, including OPD facilities, point-of-care tests, and free medications, ensuring accessible healthcare where it is most needed. Initiatives such as the Swabhiman program address women’s maternal, menstrual, and neonatal health, promoting awareness and education on crucial health management and hygiene practices.
To complete the cycle of holistic support, Smile Foundation champions initiatives like STeP and Swabhiman, empowering youth and women through vocational skills training. By enhancing employability and fostering entrepreneurship, these programs aim to uplift economic independence and societal standing among the most vulnerable.
